Jackson noted “Elvis wanted me to be right there next to him...He wanted me to watch him all the time and would look for approval when he had done unusually well.” Elvis gave Jackson a solid gold TCB necklace, marking him as part of Presley’s inner circle (more below on Elvis and Bruce's relationship) The badge and luggage tags are in excellent used condition, and all of the documents are in very good condition, each having been folded at some point, but having been stored flat for many decades. With Recordmecca's written lifetime guarantee of authenticity, noting that these were part of Bruce Jackson’s collection of Elvis memorabilia. Photos of book and Bruce with Elvis for reference only, and not included. ___________ Bruce Jackson (1949- 2011) was an acclaimed Australian audio engineer responsible for concert sound for Elvis Presley from 1971 until his death in 1977, as well as Bruce Springsteen (1978-1988), and Barbara Streisand (1993- 2007). During his long career Jackson worked with many major artists including Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and the Faces, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Al Green, and the Jackson Five with Michael Jackson. He also oversaw sound design for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. From Wikipedia: Jackson designed a powerful stage monitor system for Presley's show, having noticed that Presley's performance was very much dependent on how easily he was able to hear himself from the monitor speakers...He advocated for a separate monitor mixing position at the side of the stage and after overcoming resistance to the concept was given this dedicated position. Presley sometimes turned to the side of the stage to ask Jackson to make changes, and a few times he stopped the show to have Jackson come out and stand center stage and listen carefully to the monitors while Presley sang to 20,000 people. One night in Fort Worth, Texas, Presley led the audience in singing “Happy Birthday to You” in honor of the engineer's birthday—an "amazing, and very embarrassing" occasion for Jackson. Jackson can be seen at his side-stage mix position in Presley's 1977 "CBS Special" TV show. At Presley's final performance on 26 June 1977, he said "I would like to thank my sound engineer: Bruce Jackson from Australia." Jackson quit his job while on tour after he was "pushed too far" by [Presley’s manager Colonel Tom] Parker. Presley apologized to Jackson, and he rejoined the tour as an independent engineer, answering only to Presley. Jackson mixed hundreds of concerts for the singer, who called him "Bruce the Goose”. In August 1977 he was in Portland, Maine setting up at the next Presley engagement when he heard he had died. To make more room for audience seating, he also used a sound system that was not mounted on scaffolding but hung with steel chain above the audience from overhead beams, using chain hoists rigged upside down to raise the loudspeakers from the floor. While uncredited, Jackson mixed the live sound captured on Presley’s albums As Recorded at Madison Square Garden and As Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis. At least 65 Presley concert soundboard tapes recorded by Jackson have been officially released. In 1976, at Elvis’s request, Jackson designed a custom audio system for his jet, the Lisa Marie. From AudioTechnology com: I did hundreds and hundreds of shows with Elvis across mainland USA and Hawaii...Elvis wanted me to be right there next to him and that’s all he really cared about. He wanted me to watch him all the time and would look for approval when he had done unusually well. I would sit beside the stage with Elvis’ girlfriend (whoever that happened to be at the time) and record producer, Felton Jarvis. But because there was no sound check, Elvis would walk out on stage and have absolutely no idea what to expect. It was very stressful for all of us...Eventually we all agreed that this approach was insane and from that point on Felton and I would meet before every show and make some attempt at preparations. Elvis and I had a lot of intimate conversations over the years, but he was older so I never really got to know him the way I might have if I’d been closer in age. I remember he used to sit me down and we’d have these strange conversations about numerology, which his hairdresser had got him into. I was a non-believer so I was always making wise-arsed comments back. I remember one night we were sitting up in his suite for ages talking about this stuff while all the show members were on the bus downstairs waiting to leave… he made them wait for quite some time from memory while he went through all these examples in a book where he’d taken a bunch of notes. Following Presley’s death, Jackson toured extensively with Springsteen and Streisand, as well as founding the digital audio company Apogee Electronics. A pilot, Jackson died in the crash of his private plane in January 2011. A memorial celebration of his life was held at the Sydney Opera House. Some 500 attendees listened to remembrances and anecdotes from family members and from business colleagues, and prerecorded videos were played, sent from Springsteen, U2, Streisand and her manager Martin Erlichman, and members of Fleetwood Mac. In 2018, the coffee table book Bruce Jackson: On The Road With Elvis was published, with a forward by Bruce Springsteen.
